Hey guys:
I have a situation I'd like some input on from those who might know better than me. I have a 1U rackmount server that came equipped with a pair of Delta blowers that I'd like to replace due to noise.
Basically, I'd like input from those who might know on silent (or near silent) blowers for a 1U Supermicro rackmount server. The blowers I have are currently mounted behind the drives up front and push a pretty substantial amount of air over the mobo, chipset, memory, etc, toward the back of the chassis.
Anyway, any guidance on a quieter blower set up would be most appreciated.

you can just search for blowers of the same size with less airflow (will reduce noise) but be careful since it is a 1U it will have temp issues if you reduce the airflow too much.

1U Supermicro rackmount server.
Which Model number of Supermicro?
Are the fans externally mounted?
What size are the fans?

Depends where the server is being stored as to what you can choose cooling wise.
If its going to be near cold air (i.e air conditioned) and not in a rack then perhaps you can change your cooling solution. My advice is not to bother messing with it at all.
Ultimately ..Just put your server in your garage in a small wall cab along with a switch and wire it onto your network.
Im pretty sure its this one thats fitted : http://www.supermicro.com/a_images/products/Accessories/FAN-0038.jpg
You may want to email SuperMicro and explain your setup and see if they can recommend and provide a quieter cooling solution to meet your needs.

Thing is this: I'm selling it and I have a potential buyer who's trying to start a small business. He wants to use it at home and the fans, he thinks, are too loud. I'm looking into seeing what's out there in the way of quieter cooling fans but at this point I'm not disposed to making any changes to the box just to sell it.
If I could locate an appropriately quiet blower, I'd probably reduce the selling price by the price of the quieter blowers and call it good. I'm just trying to find something that fits that bill is all. I'm half tempted to tell the guy that it's a friggin' rackmount, industrial-strength server and not a quiet, purring desktop.

The problem with a 1U unit is the cooling design is intended to have some hefty fans pushing air through it. It is not meant to be quiet, it is meant to cool in a limited space chassis.
I have had some servers without fans run fine with the covers off in a super cool data center. The processors ran nicely but this is not reccommended unless you have a way to monitor the system 24/7 that would alert you and shut down appropriately.
